Gioachino Antonio Rossini was born into a family of musicians in Pesaro, a town on the Adriatic coast of Italy which was then part of the Papal States. His father, Giuseppe, was a horn player and inspector of slaughterhouses. The opera was staged at the Rossini Opera Festival for the first time in 1983 with the direction of Pier Luigi Pizzi and Claudio Scimone conducting. Pizzi's production was revived two years later in 1985 with Donato Renzetti leading the Chamber Orchestra of Europe .
